The Implausible Edifice

Archetypes of disturbia in a multiverse of endless repetition.ㅤ

When is a building not a building?
When it’s a semi-organic, quantum-dimensional, sig-transmogrifier.

The ancient Romans were a superstitious lot, assigning a different god to take the blame for every aspect of their miserable lives. Genius loci, for example, was the protective spirit of a(ny) place, which in modern usage generally denotes its defining character and atmosphere.

We can think of ourselves as awaking the “spirit manifest” that is reflected within us whenever we have experienced something or some place truly remarkable, perhaps inexplicable. The automatic reaction amplifies the experience-- a rush of giddiness, the prickly chill of some deeper connection that we can only sense but not name.

Is it a good spirit or bad? beneficent or malevolent? Because of the multiverse, plausibility lies not in a structure’s very existence, but in the likelihood that it is common—one of a billion examples-- and not a singularity, an aberration, or a cancer. There is no test to be given or proof to be had, only the collective experience of its users.

In the end, what does it matter if a place exists in endless repetition or stands alone in the multiverse? Some believe they are signposts, indicators of an origin instance that came into existence before qubes, and constitute perhaps some of the very first universes, ones that came into existence before the rules of reality were fully worked out. There is darkness there, rarely overt, but usually lurking and occasionally glimpsed-- stark reminders that beyond our infinite multiverse, there are still other dimensions beyond our scope of comprehension.

The places described in these pages are very real and accessible. Their stories may not defy belief, or challenge one’s perception of reality, but incidents have occurred and legends exist suggesting there are deeper stories to uncover.
